It was wonderful. Amanda was a beautiful bride and Russell a handsome groom. I will try to get some pictures posted in the next few days. Donna, Cindy Nell, and Tristan video taped some, but I haven't looked at it yet. I will try to learn some more tech stuff and post some of that, too. In about two weeks the photographer should have some pictures posted on line. When that happens, I will send the link to everybody so you can see them.

Hurrican news

Scarlett so glad everything is alright at your house. I did talk with Donna and knew you and family were ok. Cindy and Jerry are also ok. Only damange is neighbors tree fell on their fence.
No power yet. Talked with Cindy this morn, she was trying to get to her office to see if she could help there. Jerry's 89 year old mother is with them, wanting to go home but she has no power either. Jerry goes back to work Wednesday. They do have power where he works. Cindy said she is alright unless the temp gets higher, then she will come this way. Right now they do not know when they will get power, said lots of trees on power lines have to be removed before they can start. So thankful but so sorry for all the others

After Ike

Hello after our hurricane. We all "sheltered in place." Michael, Tristan, and I were at my house. Amanda and Russell stayed at their house. The storm went through during the night. I heard wind and rain and was hot. The electricity went out about 8:30. We had ice and plenty of water, and it never went out. When we woke up on Saturday, the yard was littered with a few branches and lots of twiggy branches and leaves. Still no electricity. I opened windows to try to get some air stirring which helped a little. We got through Saturday and I was dreading trying to get to sleep that night. About 8:00 pm the electricity came back on. Amanda came over for a little while a little after 9:00 because their electricity was not back on. I haven't spoken with her this morning to know if it came back on or not. They had very little damage at their house. She said part of the fence leaned a little but did not fall and they lost about 5 shingles on their house.

Thank goodness we live in a county that ended up a little west of the eye's path. We did not get the flooding nor the extensive damage causing the power outages. Perhaps our outage was caused by limbs on lines or a blown transformer. Anyway, whatever was the cause it was accessible and, apparently, fixable.

We have heavy rains today--leftover moisture from Ike and a cold front moving in. So what debris isn't washed away with the rain this morning, we will clean up this afternoon. We fared much better than many and I am grateful.

Turner Play House

We Turners enjoy going to Beulah. We call the lake the "West Coast Riveria" It is as far west as you can go and still be in Mississippi. The lake is an oxbow from the Mississippi River. The flood stage for the river is 35 ft. Today the river stage is 43.9 going to 45 feet. Above is a picture of our trailer that used to be on the banks of Beulah lake! The trailer is on blocks - 5 feet off of the ground.

Easter, with us always

Why worry about the loaves and the fishes?
If you say the right words, the wine expands.
If you say them with love
and the felt ferocity of that love,
and the felt necessity of that love,
the fish explode into many.
Imagine him, speaking,
and don’t worry about what is reality,
or what is plain, or what is mysterious.
If you were there, it was all those things.
If you can imagine it, it is all those things.
Eat, drink, be happy.
Accept the miracle.
Accept, too, each spoken word,
spoken with love.

Ancestry

Hey guys,

I'm Lizzie, Cindy Seghers oldest (for those who dont remember me, or are confused by my 6 name changes.)

Anyway, I know that everyone is busy gearing up for this year's reunion, which I will be very sorry to miss, but I have a request...

I have begun my own family tree, one which was very much aided by my own father's extensive research on genealogy. However, with the advent of the internet, so much more has become available, and I have been able to trace the Gibsons back further than William Gibson who lived in Tyrone, Ireland from 1705-1771...in fact, I have discovered a Thomas Gibson, William Gibson's great-great-grandfather, who lived in 1540 in Lancashire, England.

Anyway, I would like to make the website available for all...however, I need email addresses. So please, if you are interested in viewing the tree (and even adding your own information), send your email addresses to erepass@willkie.com and I will add you guys.

Miss you all, love you all, and hope to see you two years from now!!

Lizzie

2 weeks away. And the heart turns to food memories

OK enough with the great pictures. What about food?

I will just do a memory dump of my favorites but everyone chime in.

Granny's bisquits.
Aunt Imogene's pickels and butter beans
Uncle Charles fish frys at the lake
Aunt Nita's chicken
Mom's candied sweet potato's

OK keep it going

Facts

FACTS ABOUT EASTER 2008

Easter this year is: Sunday March 23, 2008

* As you may know, Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st fullmoon; after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20).

* This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Things you might be interested in!

* Based on the above, Easter can actually be one day earlier (March22) but that is pretty rare. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here are the facts:

* The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913.

* The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

Couldn't be sweeter !!!

Looks like they are having fun

WHO ARE THESE BEAUTIES ??

This is for you, Kathy

Kathy and I were talking about reunion activities last night, and Kent, who does not come to the reunion, suggested activities involving paint guns and running through the woods. While Kathy did not want her children probably even aware of such activites, she did mention something about 'in her day.' I probably told this two years ago, but here it is again.

One hot summer day, Gary, Becky and I were sitting on the lake bank at the Fireman's Club at Beulah. Daddy/Uncle Charles came down the bank and asked what we were doing. "Watching the kids in the water," we said. "When y'all were that age, we just let you go on your own," he said. "We remember," we said, "that's why we're down here watching the kids."

Granddaddy Poppa? He rocked in a chair either on the porch or in a corner of the living room and gave out baby ruths and spit in his spit can. Does anyone know what he did prior to what I know of him?

Grandaddy Vowell Ran a small country store out by Franklin's and Imogene's near the quiver river bridge. Also worked in the meat market of the grocery store in Ruleville

Granny Vowell Took care of everyone? Cooked the best biscuits? Was she a stay at home mom? Any help here?

Keep adding to this

Down to the Wire

Once we were playing pinochle at the table in Jack's and Jo's little kitchen on Deering Street. We got down to the final play...depending on the card I laid down, we won or lost. Jack sat at my side...he did his wow-wow laugh, like girl, you know you are not smart enough to pick the right card, which card are you going to pick, nope, not that one, you are going to pick the wrong card, no guts no blue chips. I laid down my card. Blue Chips. We won. Ladies and Gentlemen, that night I rocked!

Come on lets all play. This is the only way we are going to remember who is in these pictures a hundred years from now. Also the ones facing you are the easy ones go for the ones that have their back to you or who are hiding behind someone. someone is hiding behind uncle james I think I know!!!!

memories building houses

Remember when gary and ronald wayne built a play house where the chicken coop and out house used to be?

Well I came that summer and they still did not have a roof on it so we attempted to design and construct a roof. Finally gave up and slept out in it one night. Took about 15 minutes for the skeeters to find us and then we were back in the big house.

I still wonder why none of us became filthy rich house designers and builders? LOL

Food, Food, Glorious Food

One spring Tom Harrison decided the Vowell family needed a crawfish boil. We traveled from Baton Rouge to Cleveland with a black plastic garbage sack of crawfish. I think they were all alive and rustley. They were pretty pungent and required open windows at stoplights, but this was the olden days before the earth is as warm as they tell us it is now, and those crawfish did not spoil. We boiled them in Jack and Jo's backyard on Deering, along with the potatoes and corn and garlic. Were there onions? At any rate there seemed to be lots of left-over potatoes, and the next day Lady and Nell (I think) suggested potato salad. They were food genuises. I still hanker for that crawfish-flavored potato salad.
